Glyn, Richard Carr
Born: Dec 1755
Died: Dec 1838
History:
Sir Richard Carr Glyn (1755-1838) purchased the Fontmell manor or estate in 1809 from Lord Arundell (of Wardour Castle in Wiltshire). The Glyn family’s titles may be a little confusing at first sight. RC Glyn’s father was created a baronet in 1759 (Glyn of Ewell in Surrey) and the children of his father’s first wife (Susannah Lewen who died in 1751) inherited this title. But RC Glyn’s mother was his father’s second wife (Elizabeth Carr). RC Glyn became a successful banker in the City of London and was made a knight in 1798 (as Lord Mayor) and a baronet (Glyn of Gaunts in Dorset) in 1800. Thus there were now two separate sets of Glyn baronets from the same 18th century origins. RC Glyn married Mary Plumptre in 1785 and they had five sons and two daughters. Their eldest son, Richard Plumptre Glyn (q.v.) later became the second baronet of Gaunts, while their fourth son George Carr Glyn (q.v.) later became the First Baron Wolverton. So now we have two separate baronet lines, a Wolverton line, and (to add to the confusion) a completely different family of Glyns emerged as the first Baron Glyn of Farnborough in the 20th century.
